whats the better bicycle chain lube for road bike?
im searching for the best chain lube on a road bike that never gets in dirt or dust.meaning i dont want something that will build up like mountain biking making resistance.just a smooth bike chain oil that will last for my all day rides.please only experienced riders who know this stuff.thanks .
I'm a huge fan of the ProLink Pro Gold. It's biggest disadvantage is the set-up time for it to dry before riding.....but it makes up for it 10 times over in durability, lubrication, and water resistance. It's very watery, so it's easy to waste it if you aren't careful, but if you apply it correctly to a clean chain, let it dry, and reapply it one more time, you'll have the best stuff going and it'll last seemingly forever. I use it on both my road and mountain bikes. It's extremely sandy and dusty here, and it does just awesome. Get some.
Purple Extreme is excellent, too, but I don't like it as much as ProLink. Purple extreme has gathered a little grime for me and can leave tattoos, but ProLink doesn't in my experience. It does last a very long time, though, and I think it's still superior in the industry in the water resistance department.
The original White Lightning is a great lube for road bikes, but it needs more frequent application and has ZERO water resistance. I was a dedicated WL user until the ProLink hit the market.
I've tried lots of lubes and don't have much positive to say about Pedro's Ice Wax, Tri-Flow dry wax, or the Finish Line Krytech waxes. They weren't durable at all for me. Rock-n-Roll has a good following, too, but I haven't tried their lubes except once during a "race emergency" on the trail.
If you ride in really wet conditions or rain (or worse...in mud), use something like the Finish Line X-Country Extreme wet lube with the green cap. You'll need frequent cleanings and relubing, but there's nothing better for mucky riding. Plus, it smells like a bike shop instead of a barrel of kerosene.
