Mountain Biking Clothes For Winter

Mountain biking in cold weather has always been a challenge. The problem with mountain biking during winter is that you'll start off freezing your ass off then as you warm up and starting sweating you will think that you are cycling in Florida during summer. Once you hit a downhill the windchill factor can cause you to get very cold once again. It is therefore important to make sure that you have the correct kit or chances are likely that you could come away from your weekend mountain biking with serious cold or even flu. Not much fun.

Here are a few items that can make your winter mountain biking experience a lot more comfortable:

Booties

In cold temperatures, it is usually you  feet that feel the cold . Pressure from pedaling and your cycling shoes will tend to cut off the circulation to your toes, which can put you at a risk of frostbite.  When its cold,neoprene booties are a must have. They  zip over your cycling shoes and even have a pattern in the sole where you can cut out a piece for cleats.

Gloves

There are several brands of  "lobster gloves", available ,  a hybrid glove that separates your index finger and thumb from the rest of your hand. These gloves are warmer than regular gloves, and the distinct index finger will allow you to operate your shifting and brake levers comfortably while still keeping your hands warm.

Your should also carry a a pair of lightweight glove liners with you as well. If you need to stop to take care of a emergency repairs, the liners will protect your hands from the cold.

Glasses

Wraparound glasses provide maximum protection from the wind and are great to wear in the winter. You can protect yourself from debris, as well as the cold. It is also useful in protecting you eyesight from the bright winter glare while mountain biking.

Socks

You should wear thick  socks although not to thick as they can make your shoes tight, cut off circulation, even make your feet cold. It can also result in blisters .  If you need an extra layer, try silk ski socks as they are very warm and also
extra lightweight.

Wind protection

The wind chill factor is one of the biggest causes of  cyclists losing body heat. Having a good wind breaker that allows sweat to evaporate , but keeping the icy winds out is vital to keeping warm while riding and staying healthy.

Helmet and liners

You lose 50% of your body heat through your head , so it is important to prevent heat loss through your head. A helmet is designed to protect your head fro knocks and to keep you cool in the summer, not warm in the winter. A fleece liner inside your helmet will keep your head and ears warm during winter riding , preventing excessive heat loss.

Mountain biking is meant to be fun , but sometimes the winter condiotions can take the fun out.  Making sure that you have the right kit and are always prepared for any winter emergencies will allow you to enjoy your winter mountain biking a whole lot more.
