Metroid Prime Hunters: Getting Shock Coil easily
whats the best coil over shock for a 67'vw bug w a ball joint front?
VW used what was known as a leaf-torsion type spring in the front end,aka axle beam. There are two springs ,one in each tube of the axle beam. The trailing arms are indexed to these springs and slid into the tubes at each end. You will notice that at the center of each tube there is a large setscrew w/locknut,this keeps the spring "locked" stationary to the axle while allowing each trailing arm to move as an independent unit and not affect the other end. You can pull one of these springs out and install what is known as a "nail",essentially a rotating bar that allows for free movement of that set of trailing arms and cutting the spring rate in half. You would then want to get long travel coil-over purpose built gas shocks with a very light spring rate,maybe as low as 75#. Your shock mounts should always be completely reworked for full function on an offroad car,travel is king. Make sure when you set this type of front end up that you do not get into any sort of bind on the ball joint. If your suspension hits the stop too hard or if your shocks bottom out before the suspension does then you will have large problems in a hurry. Suspension bottoming or binding will cause premature ball joint separation,shock bottoming will break the shock valving and cause separation.Fox is good if you are just playing should you get serious contact Koni,Bilstein, or Ohlins. Most hardcore offroaders use a custom built beam that utilizes the link-pin style front end to prevent the ball joint problems. Most of these are built as a wide track front ends offering better stability and cornering.
