Workouts for Results
First of all, you need to stop concentrating all your efforts on looking different. It can take a while to start looking different in the mirror. A much better way, is to concentrate on improving your performance. Aim to get stronger, faster, to be able to lift more or do more in a certain time period. Performance improvements can come quickly if you train correctly and we all know that achieving goals gives us incentive to keep on trying and improving. In the meantime, our bodies will be changing.
Would you like to look like a marathon runner? Do you want to be muscle bound like a body builder? No. Well why do we try to copy their training programs. Why do we do our cardio for long periods at a lower intensity and why do we do endless sets of bicep curls and tricep extensions?
Try combining bodyweight exercises such as push ups, pull ups, squats and lunges. Do them in a circuit with little or no rests. Try 10 repetitions of each and see how many 'rounds' you can do in 15 minutes. Or do each exercise for a timed period and see how many repetitions you can do in a minute or two. At each workout try to beat your score from last time. Change the order of the exercises and add dumbells or a medicine ball for variety. There are an endless number of different strength exercises that can be done with just a set of adjustable dumbells or even with no additional weights at all. These workouts will not only increase your stength and muscular endurance, but will improve your cardiovascular endurance as well if you take no or very little rest periods.
To directly improve your cardiovascular performance, do sprints. You don't need a treadmill for these. Run outside or up a hill. Use a stationary bike if you have one, or a skipping rope, step ups or swimming. Go as hard as you can for a timed period (maybe 30 seconds to 2 minutes) and ease up for a shorter timed period in between. See if you can cover more distance for the workout. Or can you go faster than last week? Can you complete more sprint repetitions this time? Exercises such as burpees, mountain climbers, squat thrusts and some plyometric type exercises can also be used with the same principles.
These high intensity techniques burn heaps of calories during the workout and also cause your body to burn more calories for up to 34 hours after the workout. That all adds up to more fat loss and that's more than can be said for your traditional 'fat burning' cardio.
So instead of concentrating on trying to lose the inches, instead work towards improving your performance. Train like an athlete if you want to look like one. You will find you are working out a lot harder and getting much better results because of it.
