What mountain bike should i get for under £150?
i realise i'm not going to get a particularly special one. i've read other posts saying that you can't buy a decent one for under £500.
All i need is one to take out once a week with my missus and to put on the back of my car to go on holiday with.
I'm not bothered about a new one, so am open to the possibility of a second hand one if it means i get more for my money.
Any tips or advice would be very appreciated!
I would go to the second hand market:
Paper, e-bay, bike shops, (some carry second hand bikes that they have service, not a bad idea), etc.
Get a hard tail, no suspension, more for your money and should do the job you want it for. Also less chances of broken parts and trouble.
Check that your "new" second hand bike:
- Is the size you need according to you body size.
- Has little to no rust, specially in the frame. (No cracks or bulges either).
- Wheels should not wobble, and rims should be in good condition.
- Gears should be rust free and shift properly.
- Pedal cracks should be strong, tight, and in good condition.
Upgrading worn tyres, chain, brake pads, handle bar foam, etc. is no problem. It is cheap and easily done, so do not worry about this issues.
Paint is a easy and cheap job, and it does not have to be perfect for the intended use either, so worry not about it.
Once you find your new bike, get it fitted to your personal need and comfort. Any bike shop will assist you, or friendly any cyclist can help you with this fine tuning.
