Greetings From Greek Greenville
Bulbs are bursting into bloom, and if you are thinking of checking out the RV to start the spring trips, think about South Carolina. There is a great festival coming up which happens in Greenville, South Carolina between May 17th and May 20th.
If you think you have Greek ancestry or if you are a direct descendant of Zorba - hurry on down to the Greek Festival and re-live your past! You can do the Syrtaki (Zorba's dance) and afterwards scoff down baklava and drink Greek wine. (Maybe you will have to drink the wine before you dance!)
The menu choices will force you to stay the full three days just so you can sample all the offerings. Such delights as souvlaki, moussaka, dolmades, spanakopeta, keftedes and much more can all be washed down with retsina and followed by baklava sundaes and loukamades.
While you are there, you may want to check out this town for relocation; it is one of the few areas in the USA that has not been affected by the realty crisis. If you like to feel that you have a strong investment when you buy a home, you may want to consider Greenville.
The average Greenville home sold for $8,000 more in 2007 than it did in 2006. This increase shows that Greenville has a strong realty market in a time when homes are being tossed aside in other parts of the country.
The Greenville realty market is slow and steady and there are reasonably priced homes to be had in this charming city. Local home prices are averaging out at $180,000. Although Greenville is listed among the lowest in the country for foreclosure sales according to Realty Trac, there are still some bargains to be had.
Greenville is the home of dozens of successful companies including large concerns such as Borsch, BMW, Flour Daniel, Michelin GE, and Lockheed - in fact it holds the #1 spot for foreign investments per capita. In less than ten years it has accumulated business investments of over $6 billion, creating over 40,000 new jobs.
Greenville demonstrates the best of an American mid-sized city. It is situated in the Appalachian Mountains, nestled amongst hills and knolls with scenic views at every turn. The hiking is unrivaled and many residents enjoy the yachting and boating on the large lakes, a 50 mile drive out of Greenville, or the paddle boating just 7 miles away in one of the many parks.
The downtown area is landscaped and green, with a town center that is full of trees, out-door cafes and easy to stroll shopping areas.
Greenville is a very culturally active town. You can catch a Broadway show, watch ballet, listen to the Greenville Chorale or the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and many, many other entertainment choices. The month of April is entirely devoted to arts events and music concerts are free every Saturday in the park throughout the whole summer.
It is still warm enough in October for another of its major events of the year, which incorporates the Greenville Cycling Classic bike race. The warm climate from March to November encourages many tourists to the year-round events.
Local talent is encouraged in the many live theaters and kids are also encouraged to learn anything from Building a Birdhouse to teen culinary camps. The community education choices run from politics to pottery and from stained glass to silk floral design. How about learning knife skills, Photoshop, or 'legal interpretation'?
If you are a history buff, you will love to visit the old houses of the 'departed famous' and check out all the museums and historical art. Before you leave Greenville, visit the beautiful interior of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. George's and soak up the authentic feel of the church. The charming exterior of the white-washed building is totally reminiscent of Greece, with its tall round towers and lower arched doorways.
Of course, all nationalities are welcome to the Greek Festival, but if you are not Greek, and are descended from St. Patrick or hail from the Ghandis, Greenville has still got you covered; come back and visit for India Day or the Irish Festival!
