I'm looking for a mountain bike for my wife. Is there that much difference between a men's & a women's frame?
Other than the difference in the top tube angle, and a different type of seat, wouldn't a woman be able to ride a men's mountain bike work? The tube angle would allow for easier transport on my bike rack.
As the only female responder thus far, I have to say from experience that needing a WSD frame over a standard men's or unisex build is dependent on the following factors; being a really small person, like under 5'3" or having a short torso and long legs compared to the more typical male build of shorter legs and longer arms and torso. These rules apply to men, too, as not all guys are built the same.
Also, not all WSD bikes have different geometry; some only have narrower handlebars, shorter cranks, a women's saddle, and brake/shifters made for smaller hands to reach easily, and least importantly, usually more feminine paint schemes.
A typical man's bike can be easily modified to better fit a woman rider, but on an entry level bike, these modifications could cost as much as the whole bike, such as shorter cranks, different handlebars, additional risers in the stem, new shifters, etc. If the gal in question is of average build, and not exceptionally leggy, have her try both WSD and a man's frame, and see what she feels more comfy on. I personally feel cramped on WSD frames because I have really long torso and wide shoulders, but just like men, women should try different bikes and different brands to see what works best.
