How to bear the harsh winter in Vancouver? ?
It is mostly rain and snow, highs in the mid 30s and lows in the upper 20s. To keep cycling to work, I bought a Trek 6000 WSD mountain bike to handle the snowy condition. I’m using a pair of Panaracer Smoke Classic MTB (26 x 2.1) tires. However, I’m still struggling; your honest advice will be well appreciated.
This is my first winter riding in Colorado, and despite the difficulties I found some tips and hopefully will help you too.
-Fenders are great, especially in your rainy conditions.
-Proper winter clothes. Investments in those true cycling winter clothes are really worth it.
-For pants, I have a rain type of pants that are not very breathable, but covers the wind very well and prevents legs getting wet.
-Balaclava mask works great protecting the face.
-Shoe covers blocks wind and water as well. Try the one that covers the shoes entirely for rainy conditions.
-Don't use socks that are too thick, smart wool works the best.
-When commuting, bring a cycling cap with you. They don't take space and can provide some warmth and shielding from rain, and the little flap can block rain from your face.
-When braking over snow, always just use the front brakes so your rear won't fishtail.
-Avoid trails that goes under the bridge, the runoff freezes at night so it turns to a large sheet of ice. Unless you know its cleared off.
-When cycling in the cold, I heard your heart takes 10% more effort due to the weather, so expect yourself to be a bit slower than normally.
-Don't be afraid to call up Yin to give you a ride, if it gets too terrible
