CYCLING MOUNTAIN BIKE MEN - FINAL
Right mountain bike size for me?
Hi
I'm looking to get my first mountain bike and and trying to figure out the ideal size for me.
- I'm 5'0" ... does this necessarily mean I have to stick to women specific designs to get a small & comfortable enough bike ... or would the smallest commonly available men's mountain bike be an option too?
- What are the smallest commonly available men's and women's bikes around (in terms of size and possibly brand)?
- When a bike size is quoted e.g. 14" ... what does this specify exactly?

P.S. ... I'm an adult, so generally looking at adult mountain bike sizes, if that is feasible.
Lets assume that you are female. In relation to the male body, you will have longer legs and a shorter body, compared to a 5" male. What this means in cycle set up terms is that, when sitting on a male bike that is the right height for your legs, the frame will be much longer than is comfortable.
However, women specific bikes are a relatively new introduction and women have been sitting on male specific bikes for years. So yes, even though you are 5" this should not present you with too many problems.
Your next option is a little expensive, but viable. Get a custom frame. There are quite a few companies out there that will custom build you a frame.
Even without a custom frame, your local bike shop (Not Halfords) will be able to take a stock frame and assemble a viable bike for you. My local shop has set up a bike for a dwarf.
So how do you know if the bike fits>
Stand over the frame, with your feet about a ft apart. Your girl bits should be about 2" - 4" clear of the top tube. Sit on the bike and extend the seat post so that, when sitting on the saddle you leg is at full extension, using your heal to peddle with. This means that when cycling on the balls of your feet you leg will be slightly bent.
This position may feel a bit weird, but it is the most efficient peddling position.
Go for a spin around the car park. If it feels as though your frame is too long, it probably is. If your saddle is as low on the frame as possible, or near enough, in order to extend your leg, then the frame is too big. Getting a smaller frame should solve the reach issue.
