downhill mountain biking pedals?
do people ride downhill with clipless (apparently that's how you say with clips) or just pedals/ BMX
i'm just wondering cause i'm not sure which way i should go. thanks for the time
Most pro downhillers ride clipless... with the Shimano DX and the Crank Bros Mallet being the top pedals. That said, more and more riders (particularly the younger riders) choose to ride flats and, ever since Sam Hill became the first rider to win World's on flats, they've become more and more popular. Personally, I only ride clipped on the road as I just don't like being locked to my bike over big stunts and through rough rock gardens but if you go to the races, outside of the beginner classes, the majority are still riding clipped.
As for which way you should go, it's really just personal preference... There isn't enough pedaling in a true DH course that you'll miss the added efficiency of the clipless pedals but there is definatley enough gnar that you'll appreciate being able to bail out and look for a soft landing spot at will. If I was going to make a recommendation, I'd say only go clipless if you're 100% comfortable riding clipped in and can get out anywhere, anytime, with no trouble... If you can unclip in mid-air, there's no reason not to ride clipped... If you ever struggle with getting out of your pedals, you'd be much better served with something like a set of PointOne Podiums.
