whats a good front derailleur for a road bike?
$60 is the limit. right now, I have some really bad shimano. it doesnt say the model so idk what it is. i was looking for some but some are braze on only and i dont know what that is. right now, my derailleur has a big plastic clamp goes around the frame. it is on the same frame tube that the seat post is in. it is an 8spd rear and 3spd front.i cant find one that is compatible. help?
1. You don't need a pricey front derailleur to do the job. When you spend more money, you are basically buying bling. The few grams you save when you buy an Ultegra or Dura-Ace FD are next to meaningless. There no pulleys or bearings in a FD. There's a clamp, a body, a spring, pivots, a cage and the adjustment screws.
2. What makes the real difference between poor shifting and smooth shifting is getting the FD mounted correctly. Mounting it too high or low, failing to set the limit screws or cable tension correctly, or setting the cage at an angle are the sources of FD aggravation.
3. You need a FD that is compatible with your seat tube size. Seat tubes come in 28.6, 31.8, and 34.9mm diameters. Steel frames are typically smallest, and aluminum can be either of the two larger sizes. You can either measure it, or you can remove your current FD; the size of the clamp is almost always stamped or cast on the inner surface of the clamp.
4. Since you have a triple crankset, you'll need a triple FD. Also, you want the FD to be compatible with the size of your chainrings. If you have a 50/39/30 crankset, you would ideally want a FD with a 50t top gear teeth specification and a 20t maximum capacity (subtract the lowest chainring from the largest chainring to get the necessary capacity). If you have a 52/42/30 crankset, you'd ideally want a 52t top gear spec with a 22t max capacity. I say "ideally" because it allows the best performance without undue fiddling, but you can make the reverse work.
5. You also need a FD with a cage that is compatible with your chain. The reason for this is that the cage width varies with the chain specification. Since you're running an 8-sp chain, you can use a FD for 8- or 9-sp chains. The recommendations for 105 or Ultegra won't work, since current production of those models is for 10-sp chains. Attempting to make a 105 FD work on your drivetrain will be frustrating and will cause the wider chain to rub the narrower cage.
In new derailleurs, you can pretty much go with a Shimano 2200 (FD-2203), Sora (FD-3403), or Tiagra (FD-4503). The former is "8-sp" while the latter two are "9-sp" but will work fine. You might find NOS (new old stock) Sora FD-3303 derailleurs at your local shop or on ebay; these were actually the older 8-sp models before Shimano moved Sora to 9-sp. Appearance-wise, Tiagra is the nicest; it has polished and clear coated aluminum parts. Sora and 2200 use painted steel parts, thus they are very slightly heavier.
Good luck, shop around. You can find new Sora and Tiagra FDs for $25-30. Save the rest of your $60. Using it on a 105 or Ultegra won't work.
