-sectionalism (long term)
-Confederate States of America (short term)

Long term:
Sectionalism is really broad, so maybe use some causes of sectionalism, like the protection of slavery in the United States Constitution of 1787 (Fugitive Slave Clause, Three-Fifths Compromise, etc.)
Missouri Compromise of 1820 (led to huge debates over expansion of slavery and several other failed compromises)
Short term:
Election of 1860 (when Abraham Lincoln became president) and right after this the Confederacy elected Jefferson Davis as their president
John Brown's raid on the arsenal at Harper's Ferry in 1859 (this really made the South mad)
Bleeding Kansas (1850s)
