Triathlon Training Programs : Step Up Exercise for Triathlon Cycling
How long would it take to reach triathlete level cycling?
I'm a 25yr female, and I can't ride a bike.
I'd like to take part in the London triathlon next year August 2008.
My swimming isn't great, but I know that I can work on that.
My running isn't great, but I know that I can work on that (as I have finished a 10km race in reasonable time this year)
But I can' t ride a bike, so I can't really gauge how long it will take me to, first learn to ride a bike, and then to reach a decent level of cycling, so that I can complete the race.
Learning to ride will not be a problem. Triathlete level is a very broad term with many "levels" in Tri. Will you be pro level, of course not. Will you be able to do reasonably well with respect to your running ability - yes. The cycling portion of a Tri is a TT. While you need racing skills basic conditioning is most vital.
If you get a good bike now, learn to ride and get some mileage in before winter you'll be ready for early spring training. Using a trainer during the winter would help as well.
Both cycling and running tax your cardio system so if you've been running you'll have the lungs for the cycling. Then it's a matter of putting in training miles on the bike. If you start in March you should be able to do well by August. If your running and swimming isn't great don't expect to be great on the bike either, but you should do comparatively fine.
