What are the best ways to defend against mountain lions or bears in CA?
I'm a small woman and sometimes like to go hiking, biking or camping in different places in California. I want to know what to do if I encounter one of these animals and it's either going to attack me or wants my food.
Is there a way to minimise the chance one will attack if it simply is looking at me but nearby?
If it were to come down to either I'm about to be mauled or am... what sorts of weapons and/or self-defense moves are effective on a mt lion or bear.
Mace? Or what about those sound devices people use on naughty pets, would those work? Or is a gun the only thing. Someone told me that if one tries to shoot the lion and miss, it only gets more vicious.
These are serious questions. I love animals, I don't even eat animals, I don't WANT to kill but I am afraid of these 2. Thx.
I am a wildlife biologist who lives and works in California and I work outdoors in mountain lion and bear country on a daily basis..9 hours a day, 5 days a week and I have YET to encounter a mountain lion. I go looking for them and still in the 11 years I have been doing this for a living, have not been able to encounter one. Sure, it is likley one has seen me..but I have not seen it! I have encountered bears up in the Sierras as well as having them in my yard on a sometimes daily or weekly basis. As far as bears go...when hiking alone, make plenty of noise, it is worse if you startle a bear. It will likely run from you before you ever see it if it hears you coming. The worse case scenerio is a mother bear with cubs as she may be protective. Sometimes bears will charge you but will not make contact..it is a bluff. In either case..bear or mountain lion..DON'T run. Back away slowly, don't turn your back and leave the area. If the animal approaches..try and look bigger than you are...open your jacket up, or place your backpack on your head to appear taller. You can also throw rocks at the animal or yell at it to scare it away. Make sure they think of you as a threat, NOT prey. Sure, you can carry bear spray which works on pretty much any animal as well as people which would probably be your biggest concern when hiking alone. Most likely these animals will avoid you altogether or run from you. It is suggested if attacked by a mountain lion that you should fight back. The average human outweighs a lion and although you may be injured, you can survive.
